Dispatch Twenty-one -- Climber evacuated

April 23, 2001

Hello this is Walter Keller again, trying to keep you updated on things that are happening here at Advanced Base Camp. Sometimes because of nobody’s fault, basically because of altitude, people don’t always think as clearly as they would at Base Camp. A Kuwaiti climber who was a part of a French commercial expedition was just evacuated, probably not in the most efficient means. Through the combined efforts of a lot of people at ABC he has been sent down with pretty severe altitude sickness, probably with high altitude cerebral edema and potentially with high altitude pulmonary edema. Thanks to the help of a lot of people he is on his way down. This can really happen to anyone up here when they first come up and if they haven’t been here too long. It can create serious problems. We’re all wishing him the best, and we hope that everybody back at home has their prayers and wishes for him, especially over the next 12 hours because it will be a fairly lengthy evacuation as he gets to Base Camp and then below.
