| April 4, 2001Hello from Tingri,Weve had our
first views of the north side of Everest from here in Tingri. We all had mixed
emotions seeing the massive north face waiting for us. The jet stream was pummeling
the top, and a large snow and ice plume was enveloping the summit. There
are many other expeditions here in Tingri (14,404 feet) with us. I spent some
time today watching the Australian team play cricket in the courtyard. And right
now they are firing off a round of Chinese firecrackers into the night sky. Theyve
already had to overcome tragedy when three members of their support team were
killed in an avalanche during an acclimatization climb, and one member of the
expedition was bitten by a dog in Kathmandu. They are still trying to determine
if the dog was rabid.Tomorrow morning at 7:30 a.m. we will begin our
bumpy seven-hour drive to Base Camp. Everyone is anxious to get to the mountain
and the task at hand.Well send some photos back once we get the
batteries in the laptop fully charged.
