Dispatch Five -- Feeling better

April 2, 2001

Hi,

Today was our second day in Nyalam. “Nyalam” means “The Gateway to Hell,” presumably because from here you leave the enchanted and mystical land of Tibet.

This morning after breakfast the team took an acclimatization hike up to approximately 4,200 meters (13,780 feet). Everyone felt good, including Mike who has obviously overcome his bout of sickness. Walter and Phil are doing fine, they are illness-free. I am feeling better, as the antibiotics are working.

The weather today was delightful, no wind, and the sun was brilliant. But of course being in Nyalam detracts from this beautiful place. From our high point on the ridge we had marvelous views of the surrounding peaks including the top of Shishapangma at 8,013 meters.

Yesterday I had a chance to meet Mark Whetu. He is also a filmmaker. His Everest film “Fatal Climb” won the best of the festival at the Banff Mountain Film Festival in 1996. He’s a very nice man and a very accomplished climber.

Tomorrow we continue our journey toward Everest. The next stop will be Tingri, where we’ll spend two more days of acclimatization.
