Dispatch Four -- Feeling the altitude

April 1, 2001

Hello All,

We’ve now crossed the China/Nepal border and have headed into Tibet. Nyalam is our present location, a non-distinct destination, with little to offer from an accommodations standpoint. The floors in the hotel have buckled so that it looks like waves on a lake, and the toilet is located across the street making life difficult for those with gastrointestinal problems.

We’re now at 3,700 meters (12,300 feet) where our bodies are starting to feel the altitude. To minimize the effects of altitude we will be spending two nights in Nyalam before moving higher to Tingri. The single benefit to Nyalam is the appealing surrounding countryside. Tomorrow we hope to take a nice long acclimatization hike nearby.

Walter KellerAll the Best from Nyalam,
