Dispatch Twenty-seven -- Planning a lightweight summit bid

Audio Listen to Walter’s voice dispatch from the mountain (368k mp3 file)

May 5, 2001

Hello. This is Walter Keller of the British American Expedition. Phil Austin and I just returned from the North Col last night, and are returning to Base Camp today. He went up on a foray to about 7,600 meters the day before yesterday. He and I went to 7,300 meters yesterday.

What we’re going to do is we’re going to go back down to Base Camp for about five days. Due to all the issues that have come up what we’re probably going to try to do is come back up well rested and see what the weather looks like. Then we’ll try to do kind of a small little summit push on about the 13th.

We’re going down for a little bit of rest before a hopeful brief summit bid. We don’t really have all the equipment in place that we’d like, but we’re hopeful that maybe we might still be able to get a chance at it on or around the 13th, 14th, 15th, or something like that.
