Dispatch Twenty-six -- More bad weather prevents progress

Audio Listen to Phil’s voice dispatch from the mountain (368k mp3 file)

May 4, 2001

Hi. This is Phil Austin from the British American Expedition. Walter and I have just come down from the North Col. I went up two days before with Ian Roberts. (Ian is the leader of the World Summits expedition.) We tried to push a camp up to 7,600 meters, but the weather, however, was a bit on the extreme side and there was a lot of wind and snow. We managed to get about three rope lengths below the camp before we decided to cache the gear and come back down. Upon coming down Walter appeared, so this morning we tried again. But the weather conditions were even worse, and we got about 300 meters up and we decided to call it a day.

The reason I’m doing this dispatch is because Walter in fact has lost his voice, so his vocal tones will be missed for the next few days I’m sure.

Tomorrow we’re all going down to Base Camp to have a chat about the summit bid, if we have one, which will be in about 10 day’s time.
