Dispatch Twenty-two -- Reorganizing at Base Camp

April 25, 2001

Hello this is Walter Keller of the British American Expedition. To give you an update, Phil Austin and I went up to the North Col again yesterday to consolidate our tent and do our final carry for this leg of the climb. It was a beautiful day, but we’re a bit tired. We’ve now spent, I think, eight nights above 6,500 meters or 21,000 feet. So we’re really getting a bit worn out. There’s also a big storm coming in. The tent flaps are really snapping in the wind as I’m sitting here.

We’re going to head back down to Base Camp and meet up with Tim and Mike, and we’re going to reorganize and decide where to go from here. Our next step in general is going to be to go ahead and move up the mountain. There are a couple of additional camps we need to establish before going for the summit. We’ll be doing these particular camps in a very lightweight style, almost an alpine style, to get our bodies ready. And we’ll have each camp hopefully established for a summit push.

That’s our general plan. We’ll be meeting up with Tim and Mike, and we’ll probably be out of contact for a little while.
