Dispatch Eleven -- Journey to ABC

Audio Listen to Mike’s voice dispatch from the mountain (486k mp3 file)

April 12, 2001

On the 10th of April Tim and I moved up from Intermediate Camp at 5,735 meters where we left Walter waiting for Phil. Phil had been experiencing acclimatization problems and had stayed behind at Base Camp. We followed the yak trail up the East Rongbuk Glacier by way of the trough and wandered through fantastic ice formations resembling lots of shark fins rising straight out of the glacier. When rounding the corner we had our first view of the North Col and of the North Ridge of Everest. A real banner of snow was pluming off the top.

Eventually after a five and a half hour slog up the glacier we arrived at Advanced Base Camp. The cook was waiting for us with some hot orange drink, but he didn't look very well. The continuous push up from Base Camp had taken its toll on him. Tim and I put up the tent and unrolled our Therm-A-Rests and fluffed up our sleeping bags. It was cold -- minus 12 degrees centigrade. We crawled into our bags and after a few minutes the cook brought some noodles and one liter of water. This apart from a couple of Clif bars was all we had had to eat and drink.
